Like in most corporate careers, English is definitely a useful skill.
But even if your English is not very good, you will get opportunities in entry level jobs, especially in retail banking, so long as you are very good in the local language and can manage basic requirements in English. This is especially true in rural & semi-urban locations, which is a high growth segment today.
But good command over English will definitely help as you move up the career ladder.
